A Sad World

After watching the Bowling for Columbine movie, I was a little speechless. I have seen other documentaries by Michael Moore and they were more emotionally powerful than this one. Despite that, I was still moved. The thought of our country and other countries murdering so many people is a difficult concept to grasp, and after all is said and done, our country, as well as other countries that have done this, are in a parade of victory. Murder is what we call victory. Millions of innocent bystanders are taken out of this world when something catastrophic occurs.

When I saw the surveillance camera footage from Columbine high school, I just about cried. That was horrible. I cannot even begin to describe what I felt. I guess I just cannot say what I feel because I feel so much: I was bewildered, sad; I do not know. I just felt. The two boys that were shooting all of their peers, acted as if they did not care about their well-being. What they did was immoral and just down right wrong.

Think, Think

My mind is numb; think, think. I have no idea when to write about for an opinion. There is so much going on in my mind all of the time and sometimes it just needs to go numb and not think. Today we have two exams; the first is done, but in five hours we have another exam; the dreaded psychology exam. I cannot wait for it to be over. I feel like I have studied hard and yet I do not remember what it is I need to remember for tonight. Ugh. I am tired; sleep deprived, and all together flustered with the day. Is it tomorrow yet?

I visit maybe ten websites.

I am not one of those people who are online all of the time. My head hurts after a while. Even with all of the new technology developing, I still prefer the old-fashioned books and hard-copy versions of documents. Apparently though, we are all absorbed into the web so much, that we tend to visit at least ten websites……

A New Outlook in America

History once again has been made and the United States now has an African American President. Barack Obama won the electoral vote by a landslide last night on November 4th. He promises to make a change in our country and elsewhere in the world. This new change is a huge shock to some people in and it scares me. There are still groups out there that are very racist and, if I am not mistaken, I believe one of those groups would include The Skin-Heads. Last night there were mixed emotions everywhere across the United States and supporting cries from citizens of other countries.

Obama has a vision; this is a very important trait for any president to become successful. They also need charisma, which he has it, and he should be a moving public speaker. One vision that I really like is the one in regards to college students. He wants to give every student four thousand dollars in college financial aid and in return, each student would have to complete one hundred hours of community service. That is not that much. Plus it gets students more involved in their community and allows them to see new ways of life.

Obama was a Senator, prior to becoming our next President, and therefore he has some experience domestically. He also was a social worker, giving him another view on how some of America’s cities really are. When he was Senator, he traveled overseas to try and help with the problems in Darfur. Obama attended meetings, talked with some of the people and tried help put an end to the genocide torturing Darfur’s citizens. He will be a good change for our country and his courage will lead him to accomplish great things.

There are those small details that will irritate everyone. I have a few myself……

leaving hair in the brush
not being able to find what I need under a clutter of stuff
rude people
when some people do not help themselves and then make me do all the work
group work ( I end up doing most the work)
unorganization in anything
other people telling me what to do when I already have a lot of things to do
some of my old friends back home (some of them think they are know-it-alls)
when something does not go as planned
when people do not clean up after themselves
when I get interrupted

Why must some people hurt themselves?

I have a friend that will hurt herself to try and make things better, but it never is. She is in and out of the hospital all the time. Today, I learned that after discovering an unfortunate death in her family, she decided to take a walk, and on that walk she was hit by a drunk driver and is now in the hospital unconscious. I have no idea how to help her. I can only try to talk to her, but sometimes she decides she hates me and will not talk to me. Other times she will suddenly need me. I never turn her away. She was sent home, from here at NMU, because she was unstable mentally and emotionally. I hate to see her like this and I feel helpless three hours away from her. I am not going to give up on her, though, and she knows that. I wish I could take her pain away, so she can live a happy life. I suppose, though, I do not have magic powers. Darn. No matter what it takes, I will help save her and if I cannot even do that, I would have failed as her friend, supporter, and hope. With each passing day I learn more about her and what she feels. I hope with what I can learn about her I can help her turn her life around, so she can begin to heal.

When it comes to debating about heated topics, I would say that I am pretty good at it, so long as it is a topic I feel strongly about. I try not to argue with people, but if someone starts something, I usually finish it. My communications skills are well developed, I would say. Occasionally I have trouble debating or arguing with someone because the topic gets to me emotionally, so it is hard to make a good response. Overall, I like debating with others, even if it is a challenge.

An outrage…..ugh

Why must some people be so opinionated about other people’s business? I have never understood it. I wish this world would be different, but I know that it will never happen. People will be how they will be and there is nothing you can do about it. Your business is yours and my business is mine. If someone has a problem with another person, they need to confront that person and resolve the problem. I cannot say that I have not judged because everyone judges something or someone every day. It is an unstoppable force! People thrive on gossip and lies on other people and unfortunately, this can lead to other problems. I do not know what to do about it either and that makes me mad.

Doormrooms

From the moment you enter, a little whiff from your nose reveals new and old. The entry was is almost always clear of clutter; the walls still starch white and the floor an ugly pebbled pattern, also making the room seem dull. Your eye is drawn to the closet full of clothing with two hampers under them, and a dresser full of more clothes. On the top shelf sits all of the cleaning products, storage tubs, and extra beverages neatly piled together. Continuing on through the short entrance way, you will immediately see into a 12″x12″ room with a colorful carpet of reds, blues, browns, greens and blacks all arranged in scattered squares.

Immediately to your left, a velvety, orange butterfly chair sits with two extra soft pillows resting in the seat. Beyond that, along the far left wall, sits my roommate’s and my beds; bunked to save on space. To follow, sits my cluttered desk full of books and papers and other odds and ends. The perpendicular wall only contains our heater at the bottom with our crates containing files and school books and our printer on the floor. The only object on the wall is the window with our NMU and Superior Edge stickers looking out at the parking lot.

My roommates desk sits diagonally form the right edge of the window to about two and a half feet against the right side wall. Next to her desk is the three tiered shelf piled high with food and clean dishes. Sitting on top is our coffee maker and grounds. How I love that taste of coffee. Following alongside the fridge and microwave that can barely fit on the top of it, is the entertainment center. The television is about a seventeen inch screen and sits on top of a small TV stand: it holds the VCR and DVD players, some movies, and a Super Nintendo. This leads you back to the entrance way where you are looking at the back of the door and now you leave behind you as you leave the room, the whiff of new and old.

Gasoline prices below $3 per gallon at some Ypsilanti area stations

Gasoline prices dropped below the $3-per-gallon mark overnight at several area stations.

The Circle K on Clark Street in Ypsilanti Township was selling a gallon of regular gas this morning for $2.99, resulting in a steady flow of traffic, clerks said.

Other stations in the Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township area had similar prices, one reportedly as low as $2.97.

But it wasn’t a universal drop. Prices varied throughout the region and were as high as $3.39 in west Ann Arbor, Dexter and Chelsea.

Over the past three weeks, fuel prices in Michigan have fallen more than 70 cents per gallon, according to AAA Michigan. The average a year ago was $2.89.

I am sure that nearly everyone will agree that the gas prices over the past year or two have been outrageous. Traveling is not as much fun anymore because at least half, if not more, of the funding goes to gas and fuel. Gas stations are always competing for business; usually their prices would be as much as a penny difference, but they have to keep up with business. Settling for a lower price has worked for some Ypsilanti gas stations, but I do not believe that is a good idea to settle. Settling will get you no real benefits, in this case, profits. Prices have gone down due to the oil barrel prices decreasing, but who knows how long that will last? The prices are different all over the U.S. Here in Michigan, the gas prices downstate are lower than the gas prices in the U.P. I have also heard that the dramatic decreases in gas prices are a hopeful decision that the economy will heal itself. Lower prices means that more people will want to get out and buy more. This would then increase the monetary circulation and this would help bring our economy back to a healthy level.
